I am located in FL (outside Tampa) and I witnessed a man walking with a basset hound outside my neighborhood as I was driving this evening. As I was turning into my neighborhood, The man threw a bone and the dog ran for it and to my horror, the man turned around and ran off as fast as he could leaving the dog. It was dusk and starting to rain.
I was so taken by surprise that I did not think to follow the guy as I was turning. I stopped and made sure that the dog did not run into the traffic (as we were on a main road) and I ended up bringing the dog to my house. He is an older basset, with a bad eye and you can tell that he has been neglected. I am unable to keep him as I have five dogs and cannot afford to take on this basset with unknown issues. If you or someone on these boards is in a rescue group that can give this basset a second chance -- PLEASE let me know. I do not want to contact animal services.... but I may not be left with a choice. Please reply -- or pass the word. This basset has a wonderful disposition and is in need of some TLC.
Thanks!!!

I have contacted both Fl rescue groups and I was told by each that I have to contact animal services and have her picked up. I am going to try to find a home for her through my friends... but I only have until Tuesday..so pass the word. She is a great dog, awesome disposition and has a lot of life left.

Ask both groups to send out an e-mail to their supporters, post on their FB page etc to see if someone will step up to help spread the word. Do the same with other local animal rescues. There are a couple of people on the board and the drool email list in Florida, post a message in the main area asking for help and also join the email list and post on there as well. Hopefully someone will step up and help out.

Hillsborough County AS is not a bad shelter- we work very closely with them! Since we dont know if the person that was last seen with the basset is the owner protocol should be followed by taking the dog to a vet for a chip scan and see if the owner can be located. Is the basset a Male or a Female? We are so FULL that we cant take in owner relinquishes at this time. I told the person that found that basset if she takes it to the shelter to pls let me know so i can follow up. Kathy Peacock Suncoast Basset Rescue
